CentreStage Theatre presents Arsenic and Old Lace

In CentreStage’s next production, Arsenic and Old Lace by Joseph Kesselring, two charming elderly sisters are well known for their charity and kindnesses to anyone in need. One of their good deeds involves helping lonely old gentlemen who are all alone in the world into a peaceful passing into the next and then letting them rest in the cellar. Helping them in their endeavours is their nephew who thinks he is President Roosevelt. Unfortunately, another nephew discovers their secret and the plot is further complicated when a third nephew returns to the house, having just escaped from a prison for the criminally insane. Throw in a doctor, a minister, the minister’s daughter and several policemen and you have a situational comedy that is ridiculously funny.

Arsenic and Old Lace is a classic play. It was first performed in 1941 and was a smash hit in New York and on the road. It has been performed many times internationally and is a favourite with amateur theatre companies. It was later made into the well-known movie with the same title.

An adult audience will enjoy Arsenic and Old Lace. There are some delicious lines and interesting characters and the play caters to those who want to go to the theatre, have a good laugh, then go home and forget about it! It has a large cast with many new faces which will bring lots of friends and relatives! – (plus a couple of old veterans who were in the play when it was first presented at CentreStage in November of 1985). There’s nothing that would suggest parents keep the kids home – although it’s probably not one that would hold their attention – and there are a few scenes that might be a bit scary for younger children.

The show stars Diana Bishop, Peter Booth, Wayne Akin, Anke VanEk, David Lane, Kevin Irvine, Cam Hancock, Tim Maxner, Gail Kerr, Paul Abela, Michael Kenny, and Brian Cottam. It is co-directed by Linda and Wayne Marriot.
