Jake's Gift
with Julia Mackay

Jake’s Gift is a surprisingly funny drama that tells the story of a Canadian WW2 veteran who reluctantly returns to Normandy, France, for the 60th Anniversary D-Day. While roaming the shores of Juno Beach, Jake encounters Isabelle, a precocious ten year old from the local village whose inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old soldier to confront some long ignored ghosts – most notably, the wartime death of his eldest brother, Chester, a once promising young musician. At its heart, Jake’s Gift is about the legacy of remembrance and personalizes the story behind one soldier’s grave. Since 2007, BC based Juno Productions has toured this multi-award winning play to 185 communities across Canada. In the last few years, the company has had the honour of receiving the 2011 BC Touring Council’s Touring Artist of the Year Award, the Canadian Arts Presenting Association’s 2010-2011 Touring Artist of the Year award and the 2010 Contact East Touring Performers Award. Julia, Dirk and Jake are thrilled to be coming back to King’s Theatre.

PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTES | Julia Mackey

In June 2004 I travelled to Normandy, France, for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. It was one of
the most moving journeys of my life, and I felt compelled to share that experience with other Canadians. For one week, I attended ceremonies, visited graveyards, and walked the beaches and countryside. I interviewed dozens of veterans who had returned for the anniversary. For many it was their first time back since the war. Their stories were inspiring and moving, and I am forever grateful to each of them for their willingness to share them with me. Jake’s Gift is a love letter to all veterans, and it is my way of saying thank you to a generation of men and women who sacrificed much for the greater good. Every day, I become more aware of how quickly they are leaving us now. I’ve promised many of my 90 year old boyfriends and girlfriends that I will keep telling their story long after they are all gone. I hope to do just that. We feel incredibly lucky to have spent the last few years touring this beautiful country with Jake’s Gift, and we want to give a very big thank you to Geoff Keymer and everyone at King’s Theatre for inviting us to be part of their 2013/14 season. We are thrilled to bring this story back to the Maritimes, where so many of our brave soldiers were and are from. Thank you for being here. Jake’s Gift is dedicated to all of our Servicemen and Servicewomen, past and present.

“Jake’s Gift is the most theatrically pure show I have ever seen.
Julia Mackey delivers a stunning performance. So well fleshed out are her characters, so instantaneous are her transitions that it feels like an ensemble show..”
- Katie Nicholson, CBC Winnipeg

“It’s hard to say which is better – her script about a reluctant veteran’s return to Juno Beach or her twin performances as a 10-year-old girl and 80-year-old man – both of which, in 60 minutes, speak more to the heart about Canada’s role in WWII than would a six-hour NFB documentary.”
– John Threlfall, Monday Magazine, Victoria, BC

“If I could give this play six stars, I would.”
– Shannon Boklaschuk, The Star Phoenix, Saskatoon, SK

“Jake’s Gift. Mark it down. Get your tickets right away.”
– Colin Maclean, Edmonton Sun, Edmonton, AB

“Impressively written and performed.”
– Paul Issacs, Eye Weekly, Toronto, ON
