Lesbians and the Third Reich
Tuesday February 10, 2009  4:30pm - 6pm (1 Hour 30 Minutes)
Lecture / Seminar

Darl Wood will give a talk called "Lesbians in the Third Reich: The Extraordinary life of Frieda Balinfante."

The main difficulty scholars face when engaging in research to recover the lives of Lesbians during the era of the Third Reich is in the complexities of the multi-leveled structures and attitudes of the people and leaders. This is exemplified in the extraordinary life of Frieda Belinfante: who was the first woman conductor of her own symphony orchestra in Europe; a Lesbian; a member of the Dutch resistance, keeping one step ahead of the Nazi Gestapo by posing as a man. She worked on her own falsifying ID cards for hiding Jews; she escaped to Switzerland where she was interned in a Swiss refugee camp, and then emigrated to the US where she founded the Orange County Philharmonic Orchestra which she conducted for many years.

This event is part of the Women's and Gender Studies Public Talks Series and is sponsored by the Acadia Equity Office and Acadia Pride.

This lecture will take place in Room 244 of the BAC.
