BLUE LOTUS - World Music Ensemble
Blue Lotus sings both from and to the heart. The three members of this Canadian world music ensemble are inspired by their passion for Indian raga, Sufi poetry, Turkish rhythms, and the direct language of the love song, in its many manifestations.

At times romantic, playful and devotional, their sound is intimate, acoustic and international - blending the warmth and beauty of songs in English, Sanskrit and Farsi with the dynamic intensity of Indian and Middle Eastern drumming, and balanced over a smooth, focused layer of drone.

MUSICIANS

SAHARA NASR
(voice, sarangi, guitar, percussion)

Born to an Afghan father and a Canadian mother, Sahara’s music has taken her around the world. As a solo artist, she has toured in Holland, France, India, China, USA and many times across Canada. As well as being the voice of Blue Lotus, Sahara has been deeply immersed in the study of Indian classical music with renowned teachers Sultan Khan (Bombay) and Joep Bor (Amsterdam), and she has taught classes in Indian music at both Ithaca College and Acadia University. Providing the heartbeat for Blue Lotus, Ken is a versatile musician who can also be found leading ORO! Orkestra (a 12-piece Turko-Balkan folk dance party band), Mindful Flower Gamelan, and the world-percussion group, Ken Shorley Trio. A disciple of the esteemed South Indian master drummer, Trichy Sankaran, Ken also teaches courses in world music and rhythm at Acadia University. Ken’s website http://www.kenshorley.com/

HEIDI KALYANI
(drones, percussion)

In addition to being the “sonic incense” of Blue Lotus, Heidi is an avid Indonesian gamelan musician. She is an artist with a passion for the block print, mehndi and textile arts of India, as manifested in her recently launched art project, *spark and blossom*. She makes brilliant chana masala, and is in love with Turkish and Balkan folk dance, notably as dance leader of ORO! Orkestra. Heidi’s website http://www.hpkalyani.com/
