Xara Tour
Waiting on the Eastern Line & Free as the Wind.
Xara Choral Theatre Ensemble and Xara Youth Ensemble go on the road in June, 2014, touring their two newest works of choral theatre set in historical Nova Scotia.
Xara Choral Theatre Ensemble provides an intensive artistic environment for women and an innovative approach to choral performance that is remaking the idea of the “choir.” Known as Camerata Xara Young Women’s Choir for its first five seasons, the group was proud to represent Canada at the international choral event, Festival 500 in 2011. Since that time, they have appeared at the Atlantic National Event of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, the Titanic 100 commemoration, and in a music video celebrating the 25th anniversary of East Coast Music Week. In July 2013, Canada’s national choral competition proclaimed Xara the top women’s choir in the country.
Xara was formed in 2007 when conductor Christina Murray, theatre practitioner Claire Leger, and a team of three young women began a year-long process to create an ensemble that embodied their passion for music making, integrative arts, and community building. In the spring of 2008, Xara was “adopted” as a second ensemble and outreach initiative of the award-winning Halifax Camerata Singers. Now in their sixth season, Xara has created its own non-profit society that oversees the work of both Xara Choral Theatre Ensemble and Xara Youth Ensemble, a training group for girls ages 14-18.
Xara Youth Ensemble (XYE) is the training ensemble of Xara Choral Theatre, and provides a unique opportunity for girls ages 14-18 to develop skills in choral music, theatre, and movement. Founded in September 2012 by Xara’s artistic leaders Christina Murray and Claire Leger, XYE premiered with a stunning first performance called Daughters of Fire.
Performers work with Christina and Claire to grow their skills and experience in choral theatre, and perform two full-scale productions per year featuring professional lighting design, costumes, makeup, and staging. Adding to the experience, three mentors from Xara Choral Theatre work with singers to provide leadership in all aspects of the rehearsal period. XYE is a creative and open environment, founded on principles of inclusivity, friendship, and positivity.
