Rosemarie Nervelle, a Canadian-born author living in Maine, will present and discuss her latest book, Swamp Robin, A Memoir.
Ms. Nervelle, born in Digby, spent the first three years of her life in Southville and Weymouth. Raised in Yarmouth and Halifax, she has produced a harrowing and disturbing memoir based on her struggle for love and acceptance from her mother, Lizzie Cromwell, who worked for and had a child with her white, married employer whose reputation and status in the community would never allow him to acknowledge Lizzie or her child. Lizzie’s contempt and desire for revenge threatened to destroy her illegitimate child.
In Swamp Robin, Ms. Nervelle looks back on her traumatic young life, reliving the happy times and remembering her struggles through the bad. From Halifax to Harlem and places in between, Lizzie led her vulnerable daughter through a peripatetic, almost Dickensian existence for the better part of eighteen years. In sharp contrast, the author lovingly recounts times spent on Brown Street in Yarmouth with her grandparents who desperately tried to protect her from their own daughter’s contemptible conduct. As well as being an inspiring story of how the author overcame poverty, abuse and neglect, Swamp Robin gives real insight into life in Nova Scotia in the 30s.
The destructive relationship between mother and daughter and the author’s determination to survive from the cornerstone of her story. Swamp Robin is a gripping tale that makes, at times, for uncomfortable reading.
Swamp Robin is Ms. Nervelle’s second major work. The Witch of Beaver Creek Mine was published by Down East Books in 2007. Both books are available at Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble and by special order from local bookstores. The Yarmouth Museum will offer copies of Swamp Robin for sale at $6.95 Canadian, which the author will be happy to sign after her talk. You may leave a message or comment on Ms. Nervelle’s website at swamprobinblogspot.com.
Ms. Nervelle graduated from Yarmouth Academy in 1952, and migrated to the United States in 1955. She earned a BFA degree in Architectural Design from the University of Massachusetts at the age of fifty-one. She retired with her husband to Camden, Maine in 2000. She has two children and four grandchildren.
