Join us for the opening reception of our Fall exhibition, Consuming Conflict. Artist Francis Hollenkamp will be at the opening to speak to his large installation comprised of 10,000 miniature green army men.

In the 100th anniversary year of the First World War, this exhibition explores popular culture to examine how conflict as concept, and war as a historical moment, is internalized into the daily experience of citizens.

The exhibition begins with propaganda posters from the First World War to situate how war was communicated through popular culture on the home front. It then explores the role of disaster tourism through the work of French artist Marcel Augis who created artwork based on sites of destruction to be sold to soldiers and tourists, and through objects collected from sites of conflict. Lastly, contemporary gaming culture is examined through the ways in which games can contextualize, reframe, and challenge conflict narratives. A central part of the exhibition will be the work of American artist Francis Hollenkamp who will install 10,000 green army men in the Gallery. The work calls into question the nature of play and the impact of repeated visual imagery.

In the 100th anniversary year of the First World War, this exhibition explores popular culture to examine how conflict as concept, and war as a historical moment, is internalized into the daily experience of citizens.
Drawing on early propaganda posters, tourist imagery, collected objects, and examples of gaming culture such as army men and digital games, the exhibition demonstrates how narratives of conflict and war are consistently imbedded in historic and contemporary culture.

The exhibition is on view until December 4th.
