In conjunction with the Acadia University Art Gallery’s exhibition, Consuming Conflict, join us for a lively Fall Speaker series related to war and popular culture.

Dr. Diana Lary: “Wartime Suffering in China: Canadian Efforts to Alleviate Misery during the War in China, 1937-1945”

This talk explores how Canadians in China reacted to the Japanese invasion. From United Church missionaries and Quebecois Jesuits to Ambassador Victor Odlum and Dr. Norman Bethune, Canadians worked on frontiers, inside capital cities, and on battlefields to alleviate human suffering.

Speaker Bio: Diana Lary is professor emerita in the Department of History at the University of British Columbia. She has published over a dozen books on the history warfare, migration, regionalism, and suffering in modern China..

Followed by a reception in the art gallery.
