A sixth generation Nova Scotian born in 1894 in Upper Kingsburg, Lunenburg County, Titus survived an austere upbringing in a large family and went to sea at thirteen years of age, where a basic training in survival would serve him well as he rose through the ranks to Company Sergeant Major in the 85th Battalion.
