Event in Room: Orchards

Non-profit groups meet to explore how they contribute to the well-being of Nova Scotia, and how they help build the new economy.

Non-profit staff & volunteers in Nova Scotia will meet for a conference to explore the contributions made by non-profit groups, as well as the challenges facing the sector.

Using a strength-based approach to solve problems, an open forum with participants and facilitators will illustrate how non-profits contribute to Nova Scotia’s new economy. Participants are asked to submit challenges they face in their respective non profit and voluntary organizations to be used as subject matter for the open forum discussion with the expectation that the collaboration in the room will yield take-home results and solutions.
The recent Nova Scotia Commission on Building Our New Economy calls for a co-operative effort to create meaningful employment in all corners of our province. And there is much talk these days of business start-ups and modernizing traditional industries. “But while we hear a lot about the business and government sectors, there’s a third sector that employs 5% of Nova Scotia’s workforce – the non-profit sector,” says Kathleen Flanagan, Executive Director of the Community Sector Council of Nova Scotia. “Non-profit organizations in Nova Scotia employ around 24,000 people.”
Non-profits also contribute to the healthy and welcoming society needed to attract businesses and immigrants, and to retain younger workers.
The conference will encompass two key activities:
The morning session comprises of collaborative approach for participants to work through the HR Council of Canada’s Take Stock Tool. The Take Stock online interactive tool helps small nonprofits better understand and assess their performance as it relates to seven core functions:
Governance
Programs and services
Financial management and sustainability
Community relations and engagement
Information and technology management
Fund development
Human resource management

The afternoon session will encompass an open forum group-based collaboration to find positive and practical solutions to issues identified by the participants.
