Written by Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894)
First published in 1883
Setting: Island off the coast of "Spanish America" in the 18th century
Robert Louis Stevenson’s story of murder, money and mutiny is brought to life in a thrilling new stage adaptation by Bryony Lavery, broadcast live from the National Theatre. It’s a dark, stormy night.
The stars are out. Jim, the inn-keeper’s granddaughter, opens the door to a terrifying stranger. At the old sailor’s feet sits a huge sea-chest, full of secrets. Jim invites him in – and her dangerous voyage begins.
Arriving at their destination, fighting breaks out between the pirates, Jim and his friends and the non-pirate members of the crew who eventually win.
Victorious, Jim and his mates reach "the spot" - only to find that the treasure has been moved...
What follows is a series of twists and turns that will leave you in suspense until the surprising end!
This stage to screen will be shown by National Theatre Live, which was launched in June 2009 with a broadcast of the National Theatre production of Phèdre. They have since broadcast more than twenty other productions live from the National Theatre.
