‘The Beaux’ Stratagem’ is a late Restoration comedy, written by colorful Irishman George Farquhar. The ‘Beaux’: Mr Aimwell and Mr Archer, two charming, dissolute young men who have blown their fortunes in London. Shamed and debt-ridden, flee to Lichfield. Their ‘Stratagem’: to marry for money.
Lodged at the local inn, posing as master and servant, they encounter a variety of human obstacles: a crooked landlord, a fearsome highwayman, a fervent French Count, a natural healer and many more! But their greatest obstacle is love. When the Beau meet their match in Dorinda and Mrs. Sullen they are most at risk, for in love they might be truly discovered.
This production is like watching English comedy move from Restoration mode into a new age, and Godwin and his cast work it beautifully.
This stage to screen will be shown by National Theatre Live, which was launched in June 2009 with a broadcast of the National Theatre production of Phèdre. They have since broadcast more than twenty other productions live from the National Theatre.
‘Exuberant. Deliciously modern. This Restoration romp is a lot of fun.’ - Time Out
