Marketing Your Business Idea – A How to Guide for Rural Entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurs in Rural Nova Scotia are uniquely challenged to market their products or services locally and globally. In this workshop, presenters will help you understand how to position your product and /or service and how to clearly describe what you do.

You will learn about understanding your target customers, what motivates them, where do they get their information, and how they make purchasing decisions

You will learn how to set SMART Goals to keep you on track, and how to measure and evaluate your marketing plan for effectiveness.

Speakers:

Donna Sears
Donna has extensive experience as an entrepreneur and consultant in marketing, tourism, and e-commerce. Donna holds a PhD in Management from McGill University, where she studied consumer behaviour with an emphasis on hedonic consumption. She was awarded the title of Doctoral Fellow for the Society for Marketing Advances (SMA) in November 2006 (Nashville, TN) and 2007 (San Antonio, TX). Following her residency at McGill University, she joined the Faculty of Business at the University of New Brunswick (Saint John campus). Donna subsequently joined the F.C. Manning School of Business at Acadia in 2009.
Since joining Acadia, Donna has established herself as a wine tourism researcher. She has presented her work at conferences in Italy, Ontario, and British Columbia. She serves on the Board for Tourism Nova Scotia.
Donna’s research interests also include the impact of 3d printing and other new technologies on branding and marketing practices; digital marketing; effective e-marketing strategies for destination marketing organizations; and other aspects of tourism and services marketing. She regularly serves as a reviewer for both regional and international business and marketing conferences.
In her non-academic life, Donna can be found training and competes in the equestrian sport of Dressage or working as her own farm-hand on her Kings County hobby farm.

Leanne Strathdee
Leanne Strathdee joined the Acadia Entrepreneurship Centre in August 2015. As Manager of Innovation and Incubation Services, Leanne works with start-up companies and entrepreneurs on business planning, and marketing and communications strategies. She also manages “launchbox” the Acadia student entrepreneurship centre, where she develops programming for students to experience entrepreneurship through workshops, competitions, access to mentors, and exploring their own business ideas.

Over the last 20 years, Leanne has worked in both the public and private sectors focusing in marketing, communications, media relations, government relations, stakeholder engagement, and major events.

As an entrepreneur, she also owns and operates Strathdee & Company, a marketing, public relations and event management consulting company.
