The Union Street is very pleased to announce that Dark For Dark will be appearing on our stage on Saturday, July 30th for what will be the last show of their 'All Dressed' album release tour of Eastern Canada! Joining them to play opening sets will be very special guests Cactus Flower and Ronok Sarkar!

DARK FOR DARK
"The songs Rebecca Zolkower wrote for All Dressed, the new EP/album from Halifax’s premier folk-pop vocal group Dark For Dark, are coded with uncertainties: “maybe”s pebble the beautifully haunting Blue Morning; on opener The Orchard a walk that is meant to “heal” offers “no cure”; on The Roof there’s an attempt “to prove/ all the science and the truth of sorrow”. These are small clues beneath the surface. They exist in exciting contrast to the confidence of the finished album, reminders of an earlier, lonelier season, like winter boots left by the door until summer.
The members of Dark For Dark are deeply immersed in the Halifax music scene: Jess Lewis performs as Cactus Flower, and as a member of Wet Denim and Escape Tapes; Melanie Stone is a member of The Heavy Blinkers; Rebecca Zolkower, as a member of Prospector’s Union and Dance Movie. Warboats, Dark For Dark’s 2013 debut, with its many contributions from peers and collaborators, warmly reflected this community spirit.
'All Dressed' is streamlined, but more expansive. Dark For Dark (joined by drummer Matthew Gallant) travelled to Crousetown, NS to work with producer/engineer Jay Crocker (composer in electronic music group Joyfultalk , member of Cousins and the Jon Mckiel band, and formerly of avant jazz combo No More Shapes) knowing his adventurous musical aesthetic would bring something new to their established sound. Together they built an unexpected sonic environment: reverbed drums and chiming electric guitars create a surprising and perfect acoustic home for the immaculate three part harmonies and signature vocal arrangements for which the band has been justly celebrated. It’s a sound that points as much to the early recordings of the Beatles and the 60’s girl groups, The Shangri-la’s, The Ronnettes, and The Crystals, as to the folk and country influences that are at the core of the band."

CACTUS FLOWER
"As has been noted by this scribe on other occasions, the quantity of high-quality female singer/songwriters from the East Coast is quite staggering. Another one to add to the list is Cactus Flower. Under her real name of Jessica Lewis she has performed as a bassist/guitarist/backing vocalist in such combos as Brent Randall and His Pinecones, Wet Denim and Hymm, and she now blossoms on her debut solo record, Magic Hour. She has an appealingly warm voice, and there's a refreshing diversity of tempos and tones in this folk meets indie pop collection. First single "Darkest Hour" has a tinge of psychedelia, for instance. The album was recorded at Halifax's Echo Chamber, and some of the city's best players guest on it. RONOK SARKAR
"Ronok Sarkar, is best know as the songwriter and founder of the alt-folk supergroup, Bend The River. They have played at the Halifax Pop Explosion, Full Circle Festival, In the Dead Of Winter Festival as well as a string of shows around the maritimes including a three night annual event, Harvest Jams, where they play house band to dozens of the finest songwriters in the east coast: Al Tuck, Tanya Davis, Christna Martin, Ben Caplan, Kim Harris, Ryan Cook and many others. Their 2014 release, So Long Joan Fontaine was nominated for best Americana/Bluegrass record of the year. However, in 2016, Sarkar took a rest from all this to release the quiet and haunting "Waiting For Alice." Recorded in just two afternoons at Charles Austin's Echo Chamber studio, with Adam Fine on upright bass. Other instrumentalists were brought in to add subtle texture but the sound remains stripped down and organic." (CBC Music)
