Pop-up sale and demonstration by members of the Gateway Rug Hookers and Mi'kmak artist, Melissa Labrador, who will be etching birch bark.

Gateway Rug Hookers

This vivacious group of ladies first began working together in 1995. From October to May the group of 14 take turns hosting weekly hook-in meet-ups at each other’s homes, which are speckled throughout Falmouth, Windsor and the Brooklyn area.

Melissa Labrador

Melissa Labrador will be demonstrating how to etch on birch bark, a vital raw material used by Mi'kmaw throughout history. The harvesting of birch bark is much more then the physical act of collection. It touches on levels that most people have forgotten how to understand. Every step in the forest on Mother Earth is a spiritual journey that promotes connection with our surroundings, our environment, our culture, our traditions, our spirituality and ourselves. Being able to partake in this journey, the collection of birch bark, promotes positive interaction and keeps that connection to who we are alive and well.

Labrador is a self-taught artist that respects and uses the images and traditions of the past to create beauty, she practices traditional Mi’kmak crafts and techniques and implements the teachings of her culture into acrylic paintings on canvas. Her work is inspired by her upbringing close to the sacred sites of Kejimkujik and by her personal studies of the Ancient Rock Carvings of her ancestors. Labrador’s vision is that through her art, she will keep the knowledge she has gained, the legends and the history of these sacred sites and her understanding of Mi’kmaq culture and traditions alive for the generations to come.
