On December 8, authors Seymour Hamilton and Susan Haley will join us for a reading!

"The Hippies Who Meant It" is a novel set in the 1960s about young Americans and Canadians who dropped — or were pushed — out of the mainstream.

Joe from the Bronx, Beth the orphan and Dick the ex-military cadet build a cottage in a meadow and homestead on the North Mountain of Nova Scotia, not far from many people of their own age. Unlike those who cut and run during the first winter, the three friends remain on the mountain, despite a backdrop of war, social change, family issues, injustice and prejudice. Over ten years, they and their friends face betrayal and despair, deal with birth and death, and eventually make peace with their pasts.

Unlike some of the fair-weather hippies of the time, they “meant it.”

Seymour Hamilton lives in Chelsea, Quebec, Canada with his wife Katherine, son Ben and an elderly dog. He is much happier writing stories than he ever was before he retired from ordinary work-work. His latest novel, "The Hippies Who Meant It," is set in the 1960s, when he was a junior prof at Acadia University. The story takes place on Nova Scotia’s North Mountain, where many young people went to homestead. Some of them, the ones who “meant it,” are still there.

This event will be hosted by Susan Haley, author of eight novels including The Complaints Department and The Murder of Medicine Bear. Her latest novel is Petitot (Gaspereau, 2013). For the past fifteen years she has conducted a creative writing class for Acadia Life-long Learning. She lives in Black River, N.S.
