Presented & Researched by Candina Doucette

Slavery existed and thrived in Annapolis and Digby Counties in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Most popular histories of these communities do not discuss slavery in the area, however. The research presented intends to add to the familiar local history and to serve as a rudimentary foundation for the history of slavery in Digby and Annapolis Counties. Much of the history on this topic has been lost forever because it has not been preserved. This research is an attempt to publicize and preserve the surviving evidence and to inspire future research to uncover new information.

Candina Doucette is a recent graduate from Acadia University's Bachelor of Arts in History named on the Dean's List for the 2015- 2016 academic year and the University Scholar Graduate list for 2016- 2017. She has been accepted into the University's education program and will attend this fall. Her research has focused on Nova Scotia's history with special attention to the Annapolis Valley and Digby. She recently traveled to Brandon, Manitoba to present her research on slavery in Digby and Annapolis counties at Brandon University. She lives in Digby with her husband and two children.
