Xara Choral Theatre is breaking the boundaries of choral performance. Weaving together contemporary choral singing, movement, lighting, and spoken word, their breakthrough performances tell stories that are transformative for audiences and performers alike.
XARA CHORAL THEATRE invites you to celebrate ten years of choral innovation and the fiercely talented performers who have helped them make their mark, along with the stories that have inspired the work.
RISE is a collection of four short pieces of choral theatre. Each explores what it means to be a woman searching for agency and fighting for change while trying to honour her elders and her past.
The ensemble will be joined by Xara alumnae, several young singers from our Chrysalis Youth Mentorship program, and guest artists Rebecca Thomas, and Michelle Raine. Each section of the show has been collaboratively developed with the featured artist and will include a re-imagined Greek myth, slam poetry, and vulnerable monologue.
Music will vary from new works by Canadians Don Macdonald and Kim Baryluk to music by Finnish, Tamilian, and African-American composers.
The narratives that come alive through this show celebrate, affirm, challenge, and mourn the unique roles women play in our culture. It may leave you with new perspectives on the many ways of being a woman, a protector, and a bearer of history.
