This weekend is all about giving yourself time and creative skills in a beautiful natural setting, and with no experience necessary. You can come for the whole weekend, with bonfires, all meals and farmhouse accommodation, or simply join us for one or both days.

We will be focusing on painting, using secondary forms of art making and taking inspiration from nature. The sessions will be in the morning and afternoons, giving time to read, to relax, and to explore the beautiful vistas of Ross Creek and enjoy some time to relax. All materials required for the workshops are included. You can choose the whole retreat weekend, or just join us for one or both day programs

Saturday (Day 1): Making Art from Sticks and Stones
This workshop uses the Ross Creek Centre’s unique location as the source for drawing and painting materials. We will begin in the woodlands of the Centre, gathering wood and making our own vine, willow and alder charcoal. We will also gather plant material from the meadow and gardens, as well as soil and small stones. These will be variously pulverised, ground, slaked and re-ground to make pigment for watercolour and egg-tempera painting. As well, we will make dye-baths from local plant-material. Finally, we will make paper from paper pulp, dried vegetation and plant-dyes. We will use the materials to make charcoal, water-colour and egg-tempera drawings, and will make a set of dye colour-tests.

Sunday (Day 2): Watercolour Monoprint
This workshop explores the beautiful medium of water-colour monoprint. Monoprint is a combination of direct painting and print-making that allows artists to work freely with gesture, surface and colour. Participants will use two different printmaking processes: wood or plastic printmaking plates that are processed with the Centre’s intaglio press, and silk-screen. One or two monoprints from each plate can be pulled; these can be worked back into with water-soluble materials.
We will explore different surface treatments for the plates such as gum arabic, work with resists (wax crayon), and experiment with a range of water-colour based materials such as water-colour paint, crayons and pencil-crayons. We will discuss making a ‘damp-pack’ of paper. Re-working processes will include working directly into the monoprint, soaking the print in order to work wet-in-wet, and working with collage.
