What REALLY Happens Backstage? If you've ever wondered what truly goes on behind the scenes of a play, from auditions to closing night, this is the workshop for you. Whether you have no experience in theatre, some, or even if you think you know what stage management and play production are all about, veteran Geoff Ball will lead you out of chaos into order with his comprehensive, systematic approach to stage management. This workshop is not only for people who wish to become Stage Managers, but equally important to producers, directors, actors, technicians, indeed to anyone with any level of experience, who wants to understand better the place of stage management in the organizational structure of community theatre. You may be quite surprised at how things should really work! The role of Stage Manager is the most complex position in theatre. Often thankless, frequently stressful, always challenging, stage management places seemingly endless demands on an individual. Yet, if properly done, stage managing can be the most rewarding, satisfying job in theatre. If you'd like to learn about the fascinating world of play production -- who does what, when, how and why -- then you'll definitely enjoy this workshop.
Geoff Ball was trained in stage management (as well as other aspects of theatrical production) at the Provincetown Playhouse, a reknown and respected professional repertory theatre in the U.S. The work was intense and fast-paced, rehearsing one show during the day, and performing another one in the evening, a different show each week. He had to learn fast, but the highly-trained and experienced professionals were excellent teachers in this hands-on environment.
In the decades since, Geoff has continued to perform every theatre job (directing, acting, stage managing, producing, all technical aspects, except only minimally, costumes and make-up) in various venues, professional, semi-professional, and amateur, with everyone from teenagers to seniors. Recently, he has been teaching workshops on stage management to theatre groups around N.S. Stage managing remains one of Geoff’s favourite theatre functions.
There are 15 spaces available for this excellent workshop.
