The Princess and the Pea by Lani Brockman and Susan Bardsley, follows the traditional story about a prince who has to get married before he turns 18, and all the princesses who show up to meet him right before his birthday. However, they aren't quite what he is looking for. A storm-blown girl appears, whom he cares for but is unable to marry because he thinks she is just a maid. When the queen finds out the girl may be a princess, she gives her the finest sensitivity test - a sensitivity bed....will the 'maid' pass the test? Will the Queen let her son marry the girl he loves even if she doesn't pass it?
This family musical also looks at larger themes such as what defines a real princess? Beauty? Kindness? Courage? The Prince doesn’t want to marry just anyone - he wants to get to know her first. This story encourages children to follow their hearts and dreams and not live someone else’s expectations or demands, and to look deeper than the surface when meeting someone.
Princess and the Pea is an hour-long show and is suitable for those aged three and up.
Joining us for some of the performances will be Queen Annapolisa and other Apple Blossom Festival princesses. Visit www.centrestagetheatre.ca for more details.
The Princess and the Pea plays Saturdays and Sundays from October 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 to 31. To make reservations phone 678-8040. For more information visit www.centrestagetheatre.ca.
