Between Presence & Absence by artist Sarah Saunders is an exhibition of intimate ceramics that explore personal memory. Saunders is an alumna of Acadia University, graduating with Honours in Biology (’85). She also holds a Bachelor of Design from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and studied Fine Arts at the American Centre in Paris, France. Past solo exhibitions include the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery in Waterloo and the Confederation Centre for the Arts in Charlottetown.

In discussing her work for Between Presence & Absence Saunders notes: The works in this show all deal, in some way, with presence, absence and the ephemerality of our personal history. I am intrigued by traces of our existence, remnants of lives and indications of time passage. Like the shed skin of a snake, or an empty bird’s nest, these pieces imply an absent life. Some of this work attempts to capture the intangible, like a gesture or memory. Empty of a physical presence, yet full of metaphorical space, these pieces act as relics of a former existence. Their fragile nature inspires reflection on what it is to be part of the ongoing succession of life, exploring themes of vulnerability, endurance, and memory. - (Saunders, 2010)

The exhibition will be view on from October 28 – December 8, 2010. Pleae join us for an exhibition tour and talk with artist Sarah Saunders on December 8th, 3pm.
