The Acadia University Art Gallery is pleased to present Cellblock Visions: Prison Art in America from March 4 – May 17, 2011. While the exhibition has toured widely in the United States, the presentation at Acadia University will mark the first time it has been on view in Canada.

Cellblock Visions: Prison Art in America provides an examination of many of the forms of prison art: ranging from paper weaving, soap carving, toilet paper sculptures, handkerchief art as well as painting and drawing. Artworks in the exhibition range from personal experiences, to tattoo culture and daily prison life. As a university gallery, it is important to bring other ‘voices’ of artists into the gallery space that do not typically fall within the canon of art history, fostering an environment of visual literacy and engagement with exhibitions. The exhibition provides a key opportunity to explore a form of art making that is rarely discussed in the public domain.

Phyllis Kornfeld, the organizer of the exhibition has been coordinating visual art activities with prison inmates since 1983, working with men and women in both minimum and maximum-security prisons. Kornfeld will present a public lecture on her work in American prisons as part of a roundtable event on the evening of March 16th. Additionally she will present a discussion and walkthrough of the exhibition on the afternoon of March 18th. All events are free and open to the public. There is also the opportunity for school and community groups to book tours and hands-on workshops during the duration of the exhibition, facilitated by the Gallery Director. Contact the gallery for more details.

The exhibition is presented with support from the Province of Nova Scotia through the Department of Tourism, Culture & Heritage. Established in 1978 the Acadia University Art Gallery presents a year-round exhibition program of historical and contemporary art.
