Please join us for a keynote presentation and roundtable on ‘Prisons, Art & Restorative Justice’ in conjunction with the exhibit Cellblock Visions: Prison Art in America. Phyllis Kornfeld will present the keynote, which will focus on her work in prisons in the United States. Kornfield has an MA in Art Education from Oklahoma University and has been coordinating visual art activities for prison inmates since 1983, working with men and women in both minimum and maximum-security prisons.

Kornfeld’s keynote will by followed by three short presentations.
Rev. Carol Smith has specialized training in prison ministry (Acadia) and Restorative Justice (Queens). Carol was facilitator of St Luke's Renewal Centre inside Springhill Institution, a federal prison for men. While there, she developed a focus on the creative arts and enlisted artists, poets, writers, and musicians to work with inmates. Rodrigo Hernandez originally from Mexico City, will discuss his collaboration with La Lleca, a collective that undertakes socio-artistic intervention projects with prisoners in Mexico City. His recent artistic projects investigate immigrant’s settlement and self-constitution process, as a radical creative force. He graduated from the MFA program at York University. Allison Smith will then discuss her involvement with the St. Luke`s Poetry Society at the Springhill Institution; in particular she will discuss the process of publishing a chapbook of the men’s work and her thesis research on restorative justice and narrative.

A question period will follow. This event is open to the public.
This roundtable is organized in conjunction with Cellblock Visions: Prison Art in America on view at the Acadia University Art Gallery until May 17th. For more information on the gallery and programming please call or visit the gallery website.
