Insects represent one of the largest and diverse threats to human health, food and forests. We have struggled for millenia to safely manage such pests, and everyday
face new challenges to controlling insect populations, such as range expansion due to climate change, transportation of invasive species, and evolution of resistance to synthetic pesticides. Taken together, there is an urgent and growing need for new and innovative strategies to control such pests. In this seminar, I’ll discuss recent advances in the use of insect pheromones and other alternative management tools, which are emerging as key technologies in modern agriculture, forestry and medical fields of pest management. In the words of Rachel Carson, "Control must be geared to realities, not mythical situations, and that the methods employed must be such that they do not destroy us along with the insects…”
