Event in Room: Upstairs

Learn about lichens and what they tell us about the forest.

Lichens are everywhere, whether we notice them or not. They are ancient and strange, a marriage of two or more completely different organisms. Home to nearly 1,000 species, Nova Scotia is a lichen hotspot. Find out what makes our province such a rich place for lichens and listen to what they have to tell is about our environment. Learn too about the role species at risk lichens are playing in protecting old forests in Annapolis County.

A former librarian, Frances Anderson has been enchanted by lichens for 20 years. She and colleague Troy McMullin (Museum of Nature, Ottawa) co-authored Common Lichens of Northeastern North America (NYBG Press 2014), one of the few lichen field guides on the continent. She spends most of her time in her lichen lab or hunting lichens in the many wonderful lichen habitats Nova Scotia has to offer.
