Birding by Ear Full Day Field Course

This course will teach participants about listening to birds songs and call notes, and how to associate them with specific species of birds.

The vast majority of bird species vocalize and decoding their sounds can increase our awareness of bird age, behaviour, mating status, quality, bird community diversity, and help us detect and identify new species. This one-day workshop is geared towards building "earbirding" skills through better understanding of sound, describing and categorizing bird songs and learning tips and tricks that will help you solve vocal mysteries in your backyard or on any of your birding adventures. The workshop will involve a combination of class work and field work to apply skills. This workshop is aimed at those with a beginner or intermediate level of ear birding experience desiring to develop or further their skills.

A great way to level-up your birding skills!

James Churchill is a Conservation Data Analyst and Field Biologist with the Atlantic Canada Conservation Data Centre. James is an avid birder who grew up in the valley banding owls and exploring nature. He fell in love with birds while helping to run a migration monitoring station, and learned to ear bird in the Shenandoah Mountains of Virginia (Smithsonian Conservation Research Center), and has been passionate ever since. He's a great teacher for all ages and a wonderful person to learn about birds with.

This course will take place predominantly outside in the forest and trails. While the terrain is generally fairly flat, there will be some excursions in the woods that require walking to find birds. Participants should be willing to walk outdoors in a variety of terrains. The walking will not be strenuous but it may involve navigating roots, rocks, and some gentle slopes.

If physical accessibility is a barrier, please get in touch and we can discuss a half-day ticket or alternatives. The BNS is also hosting accessible birding events the Miners' Marsh in Kentville in June.

Some course time will take place inside in a studio.

Lunch will be held in a common area inside or outside based on the weather.

Dietary preferences and restrictions can be accommodated with advance notice to Ross Creek (form available as part of the registration).

Transportation support can be arranged. Please contact us if this is a barrier to ticket purchase. Carpooling will be arranged as well.
