Event in Room: Upstairs
Every location has a ‘personality’ of sound, which changes over time—this time can be measured in seconds, such as that of a bird call, or the whine of a mosquito, or it can be seasonal, such as the sound of snow crunching underfoot, or the rustling of leaves in mid summer. Audio editing software allows for the dissection of sound, pulling it apart and reconfiguring it over time. A mosquito’s whine can be lowered in tone and extended to become a low and lengthy moan. The repeated tapping of a mechanic’s hammer can become the rhythm of city street. The pulsing of a milking machine can mimic the flow of blood through a human heart. This introductory workshop will include working with field recordings, manipulating and processing them to show how we can create unique audio compositions. We will record sounds as part of the session, and use them as source material to discover the sound worlds contained within them, and the sound sculptures that can be built from them. As time allows, a final soundscape by the participants will be made.
