Soup in the Park to Support Our Unhoused

Concerned Citizens in Middleton will be serving Soup in the Park to Support Our Unhoused.

We hope to elevate and amplify the voices of people with lived homeless experience; help the community
understand what the real challenges are and what the solutions might be; build local partnerships and
alliances that will benefit our Annapolis Valley rural communities.
We will serve hot soup and provide an opportunity for local organizations and elected representatives to share
their perspectives on the current crisis, the solutions they envision, and the supports they offer.

On Saturday, January 27th, our group of concerned citizens held a rally in Centennial Park and marched around the town center with signs and chants demanding homeless shelters and affordable housing. It was an action that was quickly pulled together because we wanted to bring a spotlight to the local housing crisis.
We are grateful for the recent initiatives in the HRM and Kentville, but we need more resources in our rural
communities now. We are raising the alarm because we have a State of Emergency in the Annapolis Valley.
Homelessness looks different in rural communities, but it is no less serious for those experiencing it.
As our first press release stated, “We are demanding that our municipal, provincial, and federal representatives prioritize emergency supports for our communities’ homeless and find a sustainable solution to end homelessness.”
While we acknowledge and appreciate the efforts being made by the Town of Middleton, the Municipality of
Kings and the Municipality of Annapolis, MLAs Carman Kerr (Annapolis) and Chris Palmer (Kings West), and MP Chris D'entremont (West Nova), we are committed to continuing to shine the light on the plight of our
unhoused until there are adequate supports, that may include access to safe places to sleep, food, electricity,
showers, and essential services to help folks get housed.
We welcome the participation of local organizations involved in supporting/advocating for the unhoused. If
you wish to speak, please email Dana at ladynessa@live.ca.
