Edward Ross began researching information on his great uncle who fought and died in World War I, concluding his research with a pilgrimage to the battlefields of the Western Front in France and Belgium. This book encompasses events and battles involving Edward’s great uncle, Lance Corporal Stephen Ernest Shortliffe and his battalion, the 43rd Canadian Infantry Battalion (Cameron Highlanders of Canada). Two major battles he participated in were: Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele. He lost his life on October 26, 1917 during the Battle of Passchendaele. He remains among the missing, killed in action in the Ypres Salient. He is commemorated at Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing in Ieper (Ypres), Belgium.
LANCE CORPORAL S.E. SHORTLIFFE: Was born in Freeport, Nova Scotia in 1892, the brother of author Edward Ross maternal grandmother, Velma Tibert, Little River and Digby. His great uncle was one of three Shortliffe men to serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Force and who were killed in action. They were: Wilbur H. Shortliffe of Digby, former employee of the Digby Courier and son of Alfred who founded the Shortliffe store in Digby and Lloyd C. Shortliffe of North Range.
