A lush period bio-pic of Dido Elisabeth Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), who was born into slavery as the illegitimate child of a black Caribbean slave and a Royal Navy officer. Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson), her aristocratic great-uncle, and his wife (Emily Watkins) raise Belle with many privileges, yet her skin colour is a barrier and clouds her future. Meanwhile, in a role Belle shapes, Lord Chief Justice Mansfield launches England’s abolitionist movement with the Somersett's Case (1772).
