A love of the sea, and teaching young people, are two interests I was able to combine by becoming, in early retirement, a contract instructor for an organization called Class Afloat. In the fall of 2007 I sailed the European waters on the Concordia, a three-masted, 17 sail square-rigger, with ports of call in twelve countries. My second teaching tour of duty began in early February 2010, joining the Concordia in Recife, Brazil. Ten days into this voyage - one that would have crossed the Atlantic to South Africa, the Concordia experienced severe weather conditions and sank in 20 minutes. Miraculously, all 64 persons on the ship managed to escape into lifeboats, and after 40 hours bobbing about at sea, 500 km off the coast, were picked up by a merchant vessel and delivered to dry land. Today I would like to share this story.

Presenter: Maurice Tugwell
A native of PEI, Maurice completed degrees in mathematics and economics at Mount Allison and Queen's. After a 35 year career in teaching and administration at Acadia, 'Dr. T' ('Tug') semi-retired in 2007. An avid cyclist, Tug has experienced the Cabot Trail a couple of times. Longer adventures saw him complete the 6,700 km Vancouver to Wolfville trip, as well as a couple of 'runs' down the west coast, Vancouver to San Francisco and Los Angeles. And then there were sailing adventures too.
