The historic Cyanotype process remains one of the most accessible and intriguing techniques. Cyanotype, named after the deep blue colour of the resulting images, is a cameraless photographic process in which plants or objects are placed on paper coated with light-sensitive chemicals and exposed to UV light. Also known as blueprinting or sun printing, the Cyanotype technique is a permanent, fast, and direct way of making images without needing a camera, smartphone, darkroom, or specialized equipment.
We will start the day learning the basics of mixing the cyanotype chemistry and coating your paper. Next, we will gather wild flowers and plant materials growing close at hand to create your cyanotype prints. Returning to the studio, you will have the rest of the day creating Cyanotype prints, combining plants, leaves, lace, feathers, and translucent 3-dimensional objects into a pleasing design. You can develop a series illustrating a theme of your choice or find ways to break the rules by playing with wet cyanotypes, exposure times, and printing on various papers. There will be regular opportunities for discussion, collaboration, and troubleshooting.
If time allows, we will touch on altering the blue by toning with natural materials. By the end of our day, you will take home several small cyanotype prints as a memory of your day.
