Beyond, beyond the Blue Toning the Cyanotype Print
Workshop with visual artist & printmaker Bonnie Baker @enoughbakers

The Cyanotype print is known for their distinctive Prussian Blue colour. Did you know cyanotypes do not have to remain blue and with some experimentation can be changed to a variety of shade in yellow, gold, browns, greys, deep purples even nearly black using botanicals?

A short introduction into the principles behind of the art of toning will give you with a good understanding of how and why toning works before we go through the basic steps of modifying the blue colour of a traditional cyanotype by bleaching and immersing our prints into baths brewed from teas and locally sourced plants such as Golden Rod, Tansy, Carrot tops, Coreopsis flowers and the juice of Stella Cherries.

Working with premade cyanotype prints, fresh and dried plant materials, and packaged teas, we will experiment with toning techniques seeing what happens when we use a variety of natural materials to change the colour of the print.

All materials will be supplied. You may bring your own cyanotype prints on paper (maximum 8”x10”) to tone.

Familiarity with making a traditional blue cyanotype will be beneficial as we will not be creating the cyanotypes used for toning during the workshop.
