“Not Just Apples: Survival Strategies of Annapolis Valley Farmers Before World War II,” presented by James Murton of Nipissing University, looks at how Annapolis Valley families made a living before the Second World War. Although the region became famous for its apple industry, most farmers relied on much more than orchards alone, combining apple growing with livestock, field crops, gardens, and food production for their own households. Using diaries, oral histories, and historical records, this talk explores the everyday realities of rural life and the many strategies families used to adapt, survive, and support themselves.
