Nani Vazana – Deep Roots Artist in Residence (September 21-25)
Amsterdam-based singer-songwriter and composer Nani Vazana is among the world's few artists actively writing and recording in Ladino (Judeo-Spanish), an endangered language she has dedicated her career to preserving through new music. For the week of the festival, she will take up residence at the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts — researching ancient Sephardic texts, composing original material, and recording in the residency facilities while immersed in the distinctive quiet of the Nova Scotia landscape.
Vazana's work draws Sephardic folk tradition into conversation with contemporary jazz, flamenco, and North African rhythms, and her compositional practice is as singular as her sound: she is known for her remarkable technique of playing piano and trombone simultaneously. The residency will give her space to push that practice forward, capturing acoustic demos and developing new arrangements in preparation for her festival debut.
Her week at Ross Creek will extend well beyond the studio. Drawing on her experience as a music professor, Vazana will lead masterclasses for local students in vocal performance, multi-instrumentation, and independent music-making, and will offer cultural lectures on Sephardic oral tradition and the importance of minority language preservation. Intimate work-in-progress previews will let her test new material with an audience before everything comes together in her culminating appearance at the Festival Theatre Sunday afternoon finale.
