Come learn about map orienteering and navigation so bring your compass!

Our guest presenter, Peter Romkey had worked for the NS Department of Natural Resources for 22 years and is now the director of the KC Irving Environmental Centre at Acadia. In his own words Peter describes himself as an explorer of the Acadian Forest (The forest in the Maritimes). He has experience with navigation and orienteering and will be teaching us about this useful, fun and challenging skill.

Check out Peter’s profile at http://kcirvingcentre.acadiau.ca/peter.html.

We are going to meet at the Woodville Trail System. Here are directions to the trail and also there is a link to the trail map http://www.woodville-kingscounty.ca/recreation/facilities/trail.html. Take the Bligh road off of the 221 at Boates’ Apple Farm and then take the Woodville Rd. to the right. Take the next left past Foots Farm up the Burgess Mtn. Road (note that the Burgess Mtn. Rd. connector to the 221 is closed). Turn onto the Trail Rd. which is plainly marked and continue until you see the clearing with the trail map sign and picnic table (~100m in).

Meet us at 10am at the trail head and wear appropriate clothing for the woods and also comfortable hiking boots that you don’t mind getting a bit muddy. Bring a water bottle and snacks (lunch?) too as there is a nice look-off with a picnic table we will go to. Don’t forget a compass if you have one.
