Kings Historical Society monthly meeting followed by a lecture of exploration into the Mayan Underworld.

The Mayans believed the cave to be a portal to the underworld which they called "Xibalba". This was the domain of the twelve "Lords of Xibalba", two death gods and ten lesser demons. A modern traveler is unlikely to meet these deities but there is still much to see that will chill the stoutest heart....

The cave was only discovered by archeologists in 1989, probably because of its remote location in Belize. No roads lead there; only a jungle trail with several river crossings. A deep pool guards the cave entrance and the only way across is to swim.

Two kilometres deep inside the cave the archeologists found a remarkable trove of artifacts and relics, evidence of ceremonies and rituals conducted over 1100 years ago. These artifacts are still there, exactly as they were found.

In addition to its importance as a Mayan sacred place and its archeological significance it is also a place of outstanding natural beauty.
