Imagine No Barriers- An Inclusive Transportation Forum
This forum, the first of a three part series, is designed to examine the needs of persons with disabilities and seniors and inclusive transportation in the Province of Nova Scotia.
Imagine No Barriers plans to examine the issue of inclusive transportation in Nova Scotia, identify innovative solutions, broaden the implementation of best practices, and seek consensus among a wide range of transportation-related stakeholders. The Inclusive Transportation Summit will host three distinct forums and facilitate a full year of activities from June 2008 to June 2009. The forums and activities will enable stakeholders to exchange views, share ideas, challenge assumptions, eliminate barriers, build networks, and develop a master plan for the future.
Community Partners
All phases of the Summit will be co-chaired by David Mooney, Chair of the Nova Scotia Community-Based Transportation Society and Claredon Robicheau, Founder and President of Le Transport de Clare Society. Project management will be provided by Community Inc. (formerly Valley Disabilities Partnership Society). A steering committee consisting of representatives from the Department of Seniors, the Disabled Persons Commission will guide activities through all phases of the Summit.
Phase 1 - Imagine no Barriers June 2008
To be held during Access Awareness Week, Phase I of the Inclusive Transportation Summit has the following objectives:
- Present an asset map of inclusive transportation programs in Nova Scotia - to provide a benchmark for 'where we are' that informs discussions about 'where we need to go.'
- Explore innovative options and best practices locally, nationally, and internationally to inspire creative thinking and encourage participants to imagine future possibilities. Here we will feature Katherine Freund, CEO and Founder of ITNAmerica.
- Bridge gaps in communities by taking an honest look at-
1. the potential for sharing underutilized resources,
2. the competition between groups applying for the same funding,
3. the building of strong networks between currently unconnected groups,
such as seniors and persons with disabilities.
In order to one day have a system of affordable, inclusive and accessible transportation, we need to begin now. This is a tall order, one that can be accomplished if stakeholders understand the challenges, are informed about best practices, and engage in a process of discovery and commitment. The ability to match practices to policies and programs to strategic objectives is the ultimate goal of all three phases of the Inclusive Transportation Summit.
At no other time in Nova Scotia's history has an event brought together the key stakeholders who are involved in addressing the transportation issues that face seniors and persons with disabilities. A unified voice and sustainable solutions are needed. Candid discussions and collective actions are long overdue. Together, we can imagine no barriers.
