One of most loved Nova Scotia bands is The Hupman Brothers Band. Ryan and Scott have an original sound, superb artistry and are at ease as they find each other in the music. Raised in a family where music was important, they began playing when they were young and song writing when they were 16 years old. Within a very short time they knew that music was their life.
Today, they make any music they play their own. They become as if one with rich percussive guitar work and expressive and intricate solos. Their musical legacy includes a deep connection to Blues and a respect for an intuitive sense of following where the music takes them. The lead vocals are exciting, emotional and enhanced by harmonies that are pure, clear and evocative. Their stories are our stories as they weave lyrics, melody and harmony into a seamless expression of the wonder, love, and hurt we all share.
Their accomplishments include nominations and awards: an ECMA, a Music Nova Scotia Award and Nominations, Song writing competition nominations, and a Maple Hill Blues Award nomination. As well as their CD’s, The Hupman Brothers both play and earn Producer, Recording Engineer and Graphic Artist credits on many other artists’ CD’s.
Perhaps of most importance to Ryan and Scott is the sharing of music, which they believe moves us all to feel connected while our lives are expressed in song.
Adam Bazinet and Chris Robison have been playing guitars in bands together since 2005. Later, as a duo, their style was similar to The Hupmans in form - trading leads and rhythm, as well as in feeling - sharing their connection to music.
They began to sit in with Ryan and Scott in 2011. Chris had begun playing bass in 2010 and Adam began drumming for the Band the next year. Their impromptu connection yielded a new collaboration and two CD’s. In 2012 they released, Back On The Mountain and this year, the new band released Black River Blues, which has been nominated for Music Nova Scotia’s 2014 Best Blues album.
Musically these four are well matched. Each writes songs in which ordinary experiences are seen as new, worthy of exploration towards a life better lived. They found friendships and the gift of making musical together. They delight in saying that their musical compositions come as they play, from an ever-renewing connection.
