In CELEBRATION of the NORTHERN SEA: Maritime Music from Scandinavia and Canada
ENSEMBLE POLARIS was founded to create a multifaceted Canadian voice for the ‘idea of North’ in music. Their innovative and genre-bending artistry has won them countless accolades. Comprised of expert performers from a variety of musical traditions and backgrounds, Polaris incorporates an eclectic palette of influences in their music, and performs on traditional instruments from Scandinavia, percussion from Asia, Africa and the Middle East, and other instruments from the folk, classical and early music worlds. Accompanied song makes up about one-quarter of their programming, and their repertoire is created by a mixture of individual and collaborative arrangement, improvisation, and composition.
The band members are Marco Cera (guitar, banjo, mandolin); Margaret Gay (cello); Kirk Elliott (violin, accordion, mandolin, Swedish pipes, bouzouki and more); Katherine Hill (nyckelharpa, voice); Colin Savage (clarinet, bass clarinet, recorders); Alison Melville (traverso, recorders, seljefløyte); and Jeff Wilson (percussion, musical saw).
The group’s provincial tour pays a tribute to one of nature’s glories which all circumpolar countries share – the sea. With a focus on Northern legends, myths and dance music inspired by the sea, the program features traditional music from Scandinavia, Finland and Scotland as arranged by Ensemble Polaris, music inspired by visits to Maritime Canada, and other original music by members of the band. You will hear tunes about sailors and mermaids, tales of sibling rivalry, songs and tunes of the Nøkk or Näkk, Scandinavia’s mysterious water sprite who lures humans to his lair with his beautiful music, and much more.
