Music
Jazz Quintet from Montreal featuring Joel Miller (saxophone), Martin Auguste (percussion), Greg Amirault (guitar), Amelia McMahon (vocals), Fraser Hollins (bass). They are coming to the Evergreen thanks to a local connection, as Amelia McMahon, their vocalist, grew up quite close to here on the North Mountain just above Aylesford.
This will be a great opportunity for jazz fans to experience one of Montreal's leading jazz ensembles, and an opportunity for those who might not yet be fans to explore a music genre which we don't see much of around here.
Joel Miller is considered one of Canada's most forward-looking, refined young jazz musicians. The saxophonist is a native of Sackville, NB who has made Montreal his home base since completing his jazz studies degree at McGill in the mid-1990s. He first picked up the saxophone at age 10, and has since grown up to become a prolific composer of modern, original, aurally-stimulating jazz music who has now recorded six albums with a variety of fantastic musicians. As composer, arranger and leader of Mandala, Miller deftly navigates the listener into his melodic world of engaging hooks and rhythms with mesmerizing sonic loops, subtle textures, as well as challenging harmonies and meter. He draws us into this exquisite sonic ambiance introducing a vast range of musical influences from folk, rock and blues to world music and direct references from nature -including birdsong from the inimitable Chickadee. Throughout his already prolific career, Miller has established a steady following among jazz and contemporary music listeners who yearn for melodic yet challenging compositions. He has shared his musical vision with many exciting artists.
