Norma MacDonald, Carmel Mikol and Kim Wempe play a string of shows across Nova Scotia from May 5th to 9th, with a special stop at The Union Street Cafe on Saturday, May 7th. Performing as a trio, they’ll collaborate on each other’s songs with three part harmonies and mixed instrumentation. With years of international touring experience and multiple awards and nominations between them, they deliver top notch songwriting, storytelling, and a healthy dose of humour to every show.
Norma MacDonald was born and raised in Cape Breton, and now lives in Halifax, NS. She likes Gram Parsons records, talking to strangers, David Lynch movies and swimming in the ocean. Her fourth album, Burn the Tapes, is a sonic conglomeration of these affections . Her voice holds sublime contradictions—it’s fluid but piercing, self-assured but full of yearning. Her songwriting is just as complex: incisive lyrics exploring old stories and fresh heartbreaks with startling acuity, all woven into a warm and bright country/folk sound. Burn the Tapes debuted at #3 on the national Earshot Folk/Roots chart the week of its release. It was nominated as Americana/Bluegrass album of the year by Music Nova Scotia. Carmel Mikol is a folk singer/songwriter and touring musician from Cape Breton. A three time East Coast Music Association award nominee and Grand Prize winner in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest Folk Category, she’s performed on festival stages across Canada alongside folk greats Amelia Curran, Matt Anderson, Rose Cousins, and many more. She’s toured internationally with Gabrielle Papillon and Kim Wempe and has co-songwriting credits with a diverse roster of artists from Gold-selling pop artist Ria Mae to blues legend John Campbelljohn. Her third album Daughter of a Working Man comes out this year.
A powerful performer with an undeniable stage presence, Kim Wempe has been tearing up highways and stomping her way across every stage in the country for the past 5 years as well as stages in the U.S and Australia. Some say her vocals are haunting & smokey while others insist she is the child of Janis Joplin & sister of Adele. This Canadian artist has earned herself an East Coast Music Award in Canada for Rising Star of the Year as well as multiple nominations for Female Artist of the year, Pop Recording of the Year, and Folk Recording of the Year. Wempe has performed alongside Canadian favourites Sam Roberts, Royal Wood, Jill Barber, Jenn Grant, Amelia Curran, Matt Andersen, Rose Cousins and more. She has showcased at JUNOFest, the Vancouver Olympics, Canadian Music Week and festivals across the East Coast of Canada including the Stan Rogers Folk Festival and Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival.
