As Benjamin Franklin once said, we do not stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing. Music is important to growing minds. So is play.
With this in mind, a concert entitled Music. Play for Life will be held on Sunday, February 21 at 2pm at Denton Hall, Acadia University (storm date February 28) in support of the Port Williams Community Park.
Actress Shelley Thompson, a former Wolfville resident, will be the emcee and Christianne Rushton from the Acadia School of Music is the artistic director. The concert features prominent local musicians including Rachel MacLean, Molly Thomason, the Annapolis Valley Honour Choir, the Acadia Youth Choir, John Tetrault, Greg Muttart, the Three Mezzos (Christianne Rushton, Paula Rockwell and Claire Mallin), Sarah Pound, the Fiddlestickers and many other special guests. A full list of performers can be found at www.pwpark.ca.
“We are so thrilled that so many talented musicians are volunteering their time to support the Port Williams Park,” says park committee member and event organizer, Laura Churchill Duke. As Rachel MacLean said, “we have so many friends with young children in Port Williams. This is a great community project.” The Acadia School of Music is also proud to support this concert. “In my role as head of voice at Acadia,” says Rushton, “I see many friends, colleagues and staff members who are parents too. It is something that the University community is excited to support and that the School of Music could contribute to by hosting this fundraising event.”
Proceeds from the concert will go towards establishing a park in Port Williams. Since the fall of 2008, a hard surface court and a parking area have been constructed and playground equipment has started to be installed. Other park amenities will include, a reflexology garden, picnic tables, resting benches and walking trails. To learn more about the Port Williams Park project, visit www.pwpark.ca.
