Olivier Messaien's monumental Quartet for the End of Time, performed by Gillian Smith, violin, Eileen Walsh, clarinet, Benjamin Marmen, cello, and Simon Docking, piano. Described by the American music critic Alex Ross as "the most etheraly beautiful music of the twentieth century", this is a rare chance to hear the overpowering composition live. Composed in a prisoner-of-war camp in Breslau, Germany, and performed there in January, 1941 for the first time. A very different milieu that of the warm and inviting Garden Room at Acadia.
