Papilio, a neo-traditional band from Nova Scotia, captures the organic spirit and drive of traditional Celtic, Folk, Nordic, and World music while giving it a new, contemporary, creative twist that is all our own. More than a ceili band, we are a progressive neo-traditional trio that invites the listener on an auditory journey through Ireland, Scotland, the Maritimes, Brittany (the Celtic region of France), Galicia/Asturia (Celtic regions of Spain), Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, and beyond, adding a sprinkle of folk ballads and our own "in-the-tradition" original compositions. Our scope and appeal is broad, reflecting the connections that Nova Scotians feel to both our deep-rooted history and to the multi-cultural, multi-faceted realities of modern society.

Colin Jeffrey (fiddle) grew up in the United States and on Prince Edward Island playing Classical and Celtic music on the violin. His interest in music took him to Memorial University of Newfoundland where he completed his Bachelor degree in music performance in 2002 before continuing classical music studies at the Musik Konservatorium in Graz, Austria. Introduced to Celtic music through family trips to the Maritimes and Newfoundland, Colin joined the Queens County Fiddle Club soon after moving to Prince Edward Island at age fourteen. For several years thereafter he and his brother Tristan were regular performers of Celtic music at island venues and festivals. Colin was also a founding member of the successful Celtic music and dance show Ireland meets Scotland and is featured on the show's CD soundtrack. Now a resident of Halifax, Colin has a large teaching studio at Long and McQuade's Music Education Centres in Halifax and Dartmouth and is a frequent freelance performer in both the Classical and Celtic music genres. Recently, Colin helped found the traditional music trio Papilio in which he plays a variety of fiddle styles with Jennifer Publicover and Phil Schappert.

Jennifer Publicover (flutes, bodhrán) leads a double life as an active freelancer on both the modern orchestral flute and wooden Irish flute, and makes full use of both instruments in Papilio. She earned her Master's degree in flute performance at the University of Toronto and her B.Mus. at Mount Allison. Driven by the desire to develop her own unique voice beyond her classical training, Jennifer has been drawn to the Celtic music of her native Nova Scotia, Ireland, Scotland, Brittany and beyond. She is also a member of the neo-celtic band Fancy's Flight, with Cheryl Reid O'Hagan (harp, vocals), Kate Dunlay (fiddle, dance) and Phil Schappert (guitars, cittern). A familiar face at Halifax sessions, she has been a long-time participant in and supporter of the Boxwood Festival, an annual traditional flute workshop in Lunenburg directed by recording artist Chris Norman. In her alter ego as a classical flutist, she performs as an alternate player for such institutions as the Charlottetown Festival Orchestra, Symphony Nova Scotia, and the Stadacona Band, frequently appearing in many orchestras, pit orcheatras, pro concert bands and chamber groups in and around Halifax. She is also in demand as teacher, and is a busy mom of two.

Phil Schappert (guitar, cittern, vocals) has been playing for more years than he can remember. Dr. Phil, as his students know him, is also a PhD entomologist/botanist who has written books about plant/insect interactions (FYI, Papilio is a genus of swallowtail butterflies, represented in Nova Scotia by Papilio canadensis, the Canadian Tiger Swallowtail). Introduced to Irish and Scottish traditional music by Don Ross – and Joel Shore, his fiddle-playing PhD supervisor – early in the last decade of the last century, Phil has developed a particular fondness for the music of Brittany, celtic Spain and Scandinavia. He plays fingerstyle guitar, and plays Tacoma (RIP) and Avalon guitars. Phil is also a member of the band Fancy's Flight, with Cheryl Reid O'Hagan (harp, vocals), Kate Dunlay (fiddle, dance) and Jennifer Publicover (flutes, bodhrán) and has played in neo-celtic/jazz/folk/trad bands in Toronto and Austin. He and his wife, Pat, returned to Canada from Texas in late 2007. Halifax is their playground of choice...
