International Collaboration on Faith and Violence

Family violence is the most prevalent form of interpersonal violence in the world today. Women and children are more likely to suffer harm at the hands of those who claim to love them than by strangers or in war. The impacts of witnessing violence between their parents are as harmful as being the direct targets of abuse for children, curbing their healthy emotional and physical development. Spiritual abuse is becoming more widely recognized as a component of family violence amongst families of faith.
Solutions to the problem of family violence require the collaborative response of domestic violence service providers, criminal justice workers, therapeutic professionals, and religious leaders.
This event will bring together researchers, religious leaders and public service providers from Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. In addition to providing information based on the latest international research on faith and violence, there will be opportunities for local religious leaders and seminarians to learn about professional development opportunities and resources developed for use in congregations.
