A History of Dissent in the Donbas and the Current War in Ukraine

Dr. David R. Marples
Distinguished University Professor
University of Alberta

In his lecture, presented at a time when Ukraine is once again firmly back in the news, Dr. Marples will discuss the complicated landscape of Ukrainian identity, the fractious relationship between Russia and Ukraine in the Soviet and post-Soviet periods, and the possible trajectories of future relations between Ukraine and its neighbours.

Dr. Marples currently teaches Russian, Soviet, and Eastern European History in the Department of History and Classics at the University of Alberta. He has published almost twenty books and more than 100 articles focusing on the history and politics of the USSR and its successor states of Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia, and has served as an expert advisor on Ukraine and Belarus to the US State Department and Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, and to non-governmental organizations such as the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
