Raoul Manuel Schnell was born in Cologne and grew up in Italy. During his studies in Interior Design at the Centro Scolastico per le Industrie Artistiche in Lugano, Switzerland, Raoul Manual Schnell set foot in the darkroom the first time and his passion for photography changed his path.
RMS settled in Munich to apprentice with Walter Schels. He soon ran his own studio, where he specialized in still life photography and developed custom made lighting installations in order to perfectly effectuate the play of light and shadow in a picture. He photographed the most challenging objects for clients such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Siemens, BMW, and Lancaster, and won many prices, including best Magazine Cover of the year, Berliner Type ’99, Award of Excellence-Design Annual, Concour Graphica-Corporate Identety, American showcase, and Gran Prix Lux Montreal.
In 2004 his career changed radically as he moved to Canada to pursue a more personal career path, rapidly moving out of the world of advertisement. In Montreal he re-discovered architecture and food as subject matter with digital colour photography. Along with his decision to re-focus came the switch to digital black and white photography with a new subject matter: people. His focus on light was and still is a central part of his images, but now he abandoned the studio with its elaborate technologies and uses natural light or simple table or wall lamps. His rigorous predator-like approach to form and human feature as psychological mirror marks his very own style, easily identifiable throughout his work.
