Trevor Gould is a 36-year-old Mi'kmaq from the Paqtnkek Mi'kmaw Nation, who has been performing all over North America for over 25 years. Formerly a member of the award-winning show DRUM!, he is also an actor, filmmaker and storyteller. As a prominent powwow Emcee and Director, he has worked with communities all over the Maritimes and the United States. For the past 10 years, he has given historical and cultural presentations around the province, and currently works as a curatorial assistant at the Mi'kmawey Debert Cultural Centre. He lives in Indianbrook First Nation with his partner and his beautiful daughter.
About the Show:
The show is a blend of traditional and contemporary Mi'kmaq music and stories, incorporating the teaching behind the songs and their origins. Some are ancient Mi'kmaq, passed down by Gould's father, others are original solo compositions. Also presented are contemporary powwow pieces, written with traditional drum groups. The production concludes with a dance segment, featuring a presentation of the traditional Mi'kma dance Kojua.
The show offers an insight on the differences between ancient, traditional Mi'kmaq music and contemporary traditional music, and how to hear the difference between the two.
